12 dementia risk factors that could prevent or delay dementia – Australian Hospital + Healthcare Bulletin
Less education in early life, hearing loss in mid-life and smoking in later life were associated with the greatest proportion of dementia cases in the population.

Data collected by international and Australian researchers reveal that around 40% of dementia cases could be delayed or prevented by modifying 12 risk factors over a persons lifetime.
Previous research identified nine risk factors, but three have now been added to the list: head injuries in mid-life, excessive alcohol consumption (more than 21 units per week) in mid-life and exposure to air pollution later in life.
