A spike in deaths attributed to flu and pneumonia has sparked concerns that COVID-19 deaths may have been misdiagnosed in Australia, indicating that there could be higher levels of community transmission than believed.

“We can be fairly certain that the flu spike in late March was not due to increased influenza infections, because flu has been at historically low levels since mid March, due to social distancing.”
In March, 264 deaths were attributed to flu or pneumonia, compared to an average of 202 deaths over the previous five years.
In the first two weeks of April, there were 134 flu or pneumonia-attributed deaths, compared with the five-year average of 95 deaths in this period.
