COVID, the wicked problem too big for medical experts alone to tackle – Brisbane Times
As with Australia’s successful approach to HIV, we need the many people affected to have a stake in how we can best live with a virus that is not going away.
How do we understand the choices we face in a major pandemic? It helps to think of the COVID-19 pandemic as a wicked problem. Wicked problems the concept described by Rittel and Webber more than four decades ago refer to the tricky, thorny problems for which there are no simple solutions. The concept is of particular relevance to this pandemic where facts are uncertain, values are in dispute, stakes are high and decisions are urgent.
