The AFL’s attempt to use the umpires to get the game flowing is misguided according to AFL legend Leigh Matthews
He said putting the onus on umpires to make decisions which open up the game was misguided with the AFL being criticised after changing the holding the ball interpretation after round four in an attempt to keep the ball moving.
“This disaster of the last month has because they have tried to get the umpires interpretations to open up the game,” Matthews said.
“Don’t expect the umpire’s interpretations to do that it is too complicated.”
