Unlike many reporters, I don’t think Naomi Osaka ought to be compelled to give a press conference after losing a tennis match. But that’s not the real issue here….
On a brute level, the equation is economic. Even when the player says nothing and pulls her visor over her face in despair, the brand name on the visor wins a few seconds of exposure. The player is a life support system for a logo, human scaffolding for an advertising sign, and is paid richly for the indignity.
This is a contract that players seek, more or less willingly, as labour for payment. Most are aware that they are not paid for playing tennis; they are paid for the number of potential consumers…
