As the peloton neared the Saint-Vallier finish line after 175.4 km of racing from Saint-Chamond, the 35-year-old Welshman put in a solo dig inside the final kilometer. He quickly jumped out to a gap of a few seconds but the pack started to close him back down inside the last few hundred meters.
As Thomas rounded a final bend, he looked back and saw stage 3 winner Sonny Colbrelli…
