In 1937, just a few months shy of her eleventh birthday, the Queen moved into Buckingham Palace. Her uncle’s abdication followed by her father’s subsequent accession to the throne meant she and her family were forced to give up their idyllic and comparatively simple existence at 145 Piccadilly, their London townhome, for the perceived grandeur of Palace life.
