In the 1970s, Dungeons & Dragons shepherded in a new era of gaming: an evolution of wargames called role-playing games, or RPGS.
Players inhabit fantastical worlds and characters of their own invention and embark, in groups, on winding, imaginative journeys.
Over decades, the game became shorthand for nerd, but has recently found new audiences an analogue antidote to chaotic digital overstimulation.
