Police SERT officer who shot Rick Maddison tells inquest he had ‘no other choice’

The police operative who shot dead Rick Maddison in 2017 has told a coronial inquest he feared for his life when Maddison ran at him with a rifle.

- Negotiators had been speaking to Maddison when he ran at police
The Special Emergency Response Team (SERT) operator, known only by code number 177, told the court he had “no other choice” than to shoot the man 20 hours into the stand-off.
Maddison earlier shot police officer Senior Constable Brett Forte with an automatic weapon, after a pursuit from Toowoomba to the Lockyer Valley.
Coroner Terry Ryan is investigating both deaths.
