High hopes and mystery in Humpty Doo as rural town’s citizens pocket $35 million jackpot

Most people whizz past Humpty Doo, a rural community about 40 minutes south of Darwin on the highway to Kakadu.
While some tourists might stop at the local landmark, a larger-than-life boxing crocodile, to snap a quick selfie, the rest of the town is largely left for the locals.
But Humpty Doo, population 4,400, this week gained national attention – and the town’s average income skyrocketed – after 10 locals shared in Lotto winnings of $35 million.
“The winners are in shock – one nearly passed out on me. The ones that I’ve spoken to still haven’t had a good night’s sleep,” newsagent Kerrie Magree said.
“They’re waiting to wake up from the dream.
“It’s just a life changer.”
