Fisherman falls overboard, police leaps onto uncontrollable tinny
Three kayakers saved a fisherman who fell overboard and suffered a hand injury from the blades of his tinny’s motor while a Queensland police officer commandeered a boat to help.
The 73-year-old Gladstone fisherman was on the Calliope River on Sunday when he fell overboard after his boat was rocked by another vessel just after 11am.
He struggled to get back on board with his hand injury and with the tinny circling uncontrollably.
The kayakers, three men aged between 28 and 30, paddled over to help and hold on to him while calling out to a passing boat, which took him to shore.
A police officer had also commandeered a boat from the boat ramp with the skipper and nudged the circling tinny, forcing it to travel straight.
