How Buckingham Palace broke the news of Prince Philip’s death — and how world leaders reacted
Prince Philip’s death at the age of 99 has sent shock waves around the world, with leaders from Scott Morrison to Narendra Modi paying tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh.
But it started with a black-clad website and a four-line statement from Buckingham Palace, published at midday local time, or 9:00pm on the east coast of Australia.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty the Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness the Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” it said.
“Further announcements will be made in due course.
“The royal family join with people around the world in mourning his loss.”
