‘A very unlucky first race’

Fernando Alonso’s much awaited return to Formula One was ended by a somewhat bizarre reason, with a stray sandwich wrapper causing the rear brakes to overheat at the Bahrain Grand Prix.
After two seasons out of the sport, Alonso did well to reach Q3 in the Alpine, eventually qualifying ninth, seven places ahead of teammate Esteban Ocon.
The Spaniard had been running in 11th spot before the second round of pitstops, just behind Yuki Tsunoda, who eventually finished ninth.
