The Gold Coast has long been known as the place where professional sporting teams go to die. Today, amid a pandemic, it is the region that is helping keep the AFL alive.
Queensland, a rugby league state that has never fully embraced “Victorian rules” football, has become the code’s saviour, as Victoria’s clubs have turned into fugitives from the virus, and Metricon Stadium – a venue that the AFL virtually owns and can open up almost at will – has become the relocated answer to Marvel Stadium or the MCG.
The Gold Coast, in particular, is the new centre of the game, given that Metricon will be hosting perhaps 25-30 percent of the remaining home and away matches …
