The Gold Coast has long been known as the place where professional sporting teams go to die. Today, amid a pandemic, it is the region that is helping keep the AFL alive.
Queensland, a rugby league state that has never fully embraced “Victorian rules” football, has become the code’s saviour, as Victoria’s clubs have turned into fugitives from the virus, and Metricon Stadium – a venue that the AFL virtually owns and can open up almost at will – has become the relocated answer to Marvel Stadium or the MCG.
