In the end, Sir Tom didn’t need to rise. Instead, he steadied himself against his now-famous walker as the Queen made him a knight of the realm.
“I have been overwhelmed by the many honours I have received over the past weeks, but there is simply nothing that can compare to this,” he tweeted after the ceremony. “I am overwhelmed with pride and joy.”
Before the ceremony, Moore said on his Twitter account he was “ready and raring to go for what is a very special day”. He told the BBC he would not kneel before the Queen “because if I did I’ll never get up again.”
