Dee Why RSL is under strict conditions as regulators push for reforms following an investigation sparked by the suicide of a man who died after a poker machine binge at the club.
ILGA chair Philip Crawford said the venue selected Mr Van Duinen as a top 100 pokie player, via its data tools, and targeted him for high roller perks like harbour cruises not offered to other members, which was both against the law and likely to encourage gambling.
“[Clubs are] sophisticated businesses with lots of data, it’s a short jump to use that data to minimise harm, rather than just focus on who is on what tier of the rewards program,” Mr Crawford said.
