A dozen children died of abuse, neglect in Queensland last year with most known to Child Safety, report finds

An annual report into the deaths of children and young people in Queensland has found a dozen died of abuse and neglect in the previous financial year, with 75 per cent known to Child Safety authorities.
Key points:
- More than 60 per cent of child deaths recorded in Queensland in the past five years were known to Child Safety services
- More than half of all Queensland children who died of abuse were aged under five
- The suicide rate among children and young people has increased on average by 2 per cent each year
The Queensland Family and Child Commission report found 378 young people aged between 0 to 17 years old died in the 12 months to June last year, with most dying of natural causes.
