MBC locate something fishy up North.
On Tuesday 09 March 2021, HMAS Launceston, operating under the direction of Maritime Border Command (MBC), identified and recovered a Fishing Attracting Device weighing
almost 200 kilograms. The item was recovered from the waters near the Wessel Islands, Northern Territory. Historically, fishermen use these artificial floating objects to attract fish.It is likely the object recovered by HMAS Launceston had inadvertently drifted into the Australian Fishing Zone. The device present both a biosecurity and maritime pollution risk. Recovery of these items assists in protecting Australia’s unique and fragile maritime environment.
