It is 185 years since Charles Darwin left Australia and went on to reshape the world’s view of history

“Farewell Australia, I leave … without sorrow or regret,” Charles Darwin wrote in his diary as he sailed away from the continent nearly two centuries years ago.

Sunday marked 185 years since the legendary scientist and the HMS Beagle left our shores to head back to England.

Onboard the HMS Beagle, Darwin and a crew of 90 visited South America and the diverse Galapagos Islands, numerous Pacific islands, New Zealand and Australia.

The observations he made about the natural world on this journey would eventually change the way humans viewed history…
