Western Australia’s mine safety regulator is investigating how seven million litres of potentially toxic material gushed from a tank at a South West refinery this week.
The incident occurred on Tuesday at Alcoa’s aluminium refinery in Wagerup, 120 kilometres south of Perth.
A spokesperson said Alcoa became aware of process material leaking from a tank at 10.30pm.
They said no employees were in the immediate vicinity at the time and that staff immediately commenced a clean-up of the site.
