The region’s infection rates exploded in early January and were amongst the worst in the entire country.
Having been rewarded with Tier 2 status after bringing its numbers down in December, things spiralled out of control across Merseyside.
The region’s soaring infection rate tipped over 1,000 cases per 100,000 people in early January.
