The renewed lockdown has cut spending and movement, increasing the state’s recovery gap as the country slowly recovers from the pandemic recession.

The Victorian government introduced sweeping lockdowns in July because of a second surge in COVID-19 cases, with the NSW government also imposing restrictions on cross-border travel between the two states.
The Victorian COVID-19 surge has had the state report about 2800 new cases since July 1, compared with about 200 new cases reported in the rest of the country.
