ATO stats reveal more competitive SMSF costs – Sydney Morning Herald
Data show the median “operating expense” of SMSFs was just $3923 a year, a likely more appropriate indication of their true basic operating cost.

Previous analysis had relied on the use of averages that ignored distortions caused by either very large SMSFs or funds that had chosen to have extensive and expensive services. Those studies also included expenses such as insurance, investment advice and interest that were lumped in under the term “operational expenses”.
Funds with account balances of more than $2 million also have a significant impact on the weighting of the costs allocated to average figures.
