On this day 40 years ago, the hopes of many an aspiring princess were dashed when Prince Charles announced his engagement to Lady Diana Spencer.
February 24, 1981 marked Charles and Diana’s first public appearance as a couple following a six-month courtship.
It’s been widely claimed that during those months, the Queen’s eldest son, 32, and the nursery teacher’s assistant, 19, met in person just 13 times.
