WA authorities investigate East Kimberley mine over iron ore spill into local waterways
Residents in the East Kimberley community of Doon Doon have raised the alarm after a popular creek for swimming and fishing turned red from an iron ore spill.

The creek’s water, which is normally a ‘pinkish colour’, turned a deep orange-red after the recent spill, prompting the Kimberley Land Council to alert the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation and the nearby Ridges Mine’s operator Indus.
A spokesperson for DWER said in a statement to the ABC, it had attended the Ridges Iron Ore mine site and taken samples from downstream catchment points.
“DWER has been advised that the turbid water consists of haematite and does not contain chemicals or tailings,” the statement said.
