It was on February 24, 2001, that foot-and-mouth disease hit Devon.
The highly contagious disease had been detected in a routine inspection five days earlier in England, at Cheale Meats abattoir in Little Warley, Essex, with pigs from Buckinghamshire and the Isle of Wight testing positive.
This prompted waves of testing across the country and, within a week, at a farm in Highampton a few miles west of Hatherleigh, it made its presence felt in Devon.
