Essendon suffer big blow after marathon AFL Tribunal hearing – SEN
The panel handed down their decision on Tuesday night.
Essendon has been unsuccessful in having Dylan Shiels head-high bump downgraded from high impact to medium, meaning he will miss his side’s next two matches.
In a weekend which saw a number of bumps in the spotlight, the Bombers on-ballers hit on North Melbournes Curtis Taylor was originally graded by MRO Michael Christian as careless conduct, high impact and high contact.
Taylor was cleared of a facial fracture on Monday, with Essendon proceeding shortly after to challenge the suspension.
Represented by former AFL football operations boss Adrian Anderson, Shiel only opted to contest the impact component of the charge.
Anderson called in former AFL premiership coach Mark Williams – who is also the father of Shiel’s partner – as a character witness but it proved to be in vain.
After a hearing which went for over two hours, the jury deemed the impact of the hit to still be high, sideling him for the next fortnight.
The 27-year-old will miss his sides clash against Western Bulldogs on Friday night as well as their match against Adelaide in Round 8.
