Speculation and sensationalism derail Netflix’s new true-crime series – Sydney Morning Herald
The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel explores the disappearance of 21-year-old student Elisa Lam, but in an unnecessarily lurid manner.
Since then The Cecil, the doco breathlessly informs us, has been the site of numerous unsolved murders and suicides and was for a brief time the home of serial killer Richard Ramirez, aka the Night Stalker.

It was also, very loosely, the inspiration for the fifth season of American Horror Story and the hotel in the Coen Brothers 1991 film Barton Fink. Cue interviews with staff intimating ghostly happenings, archival newspaper articles about sordid happenings…
