Want to get a glimpse of what Apple’s next iOS version will look like before everyone else? The company is now allowing fans the chance to test the beta version of iOS 14 on their iPhone or iPad.
To get access and download the latest version, Apple fans first have to sign up for the Beta Software Program using their Apple ID.
The decision to open the beta version to the public is to further improve the software, so the pre-release iOS contains a Feedback Assistant app on the home screen to make sharing feedback a breeze.
The app lets Apple know directly of problems, or when something doesn’t work as expected. There’s a FAQ section for users who are interested in the Beta Software Program and want to know more.
But just as a warning, the whole point of testing a beta version is to find errors so users who, for example, lose data while testing it out can’t hold Apple responsible. The US-based company even strongly advises people to install beta software on a second device.
Before installing the beta iOS, it’s important to create a back-up copy ahead of time. If there are any problems, or the tester loses interest, then they can restore their device to the way it was.
In addition to newly designed app symbols, beta testers can expect to see widgets on the iOS 14 home screen, something that Android users are already familiar with. The widgets for example, for the daily weather, top news or a certain stock’s performance come in different sizes and can be arranged at will on the home screen.
New is also the ability to continue watching videos or making a FaceTime call while using another app, as well as a Translate app that’s integrated into the operating system and improvements to Maps.
The new version will also warn users if they’re using a weak password or ones that are circulating online after a successful cyberattack or data leak. In the future, users will also have to give their consent to allow apps to track the device’s advertising ID. dpa
