Police expand search area for three fishermen missing off Cairns since last Tuesday
Police searching for three fishermen missing in seas off Cairns in Far North Queensland since Australia Day are expanding the search to cover tens of thousands of square kilometres, but say hopes of finding them alive are diminishing.
Key points:
- Searchers last week found a waterlogged lifejacket and two fuel containers from the missing boat
- Police had since received an unconfirmed report of another fuel container found within the search area
- The search is focussing on islands in the area to rule out if the men are stranded and unable to call for help
The three men — aged 18, 27 and 37 — were last seen off the coast of Green Island on Tuesday.
A large-scale air and sea search was sparked when they failed to return home that evening.
