Leading commentator Sam Smith says Ash Barty is perfectly placed to make a successful return to the sport, after nearly a year away from top-level tennis.
Barty hasn’t played a tour match since Doha last February, preferring to sit out the tournaments that were held in the latter half of 2020. She skipped both the US Open and the defense of her French Open crown, remaining in Australia rather than travelling to virus hotspots in the United States and Europe.
