Stewards adjourn inquiry into the performances of two riders at Caulfield

Lachlan King and Teo Nugent are subject to an ongoing stewards’ inquiry into the way they rode their mounts in the early and middle stages of the final race at Caulfield on Saturday.
King was aboard Surreal Image and Nugent was on France’s Boy, the two horses who staged an on-pace duel in the Neds Toolbox Handicap.
In the middle stages of the 1700m event the leading pair was around eight to 10 lengths in front of their nearest rivals.
Surreal Image and France’s Boy each recorded a 10.94-second split from the 1600m to the 1400m with France’s Boy recording a 46.84secs split from the 1600m to the 800m and Surreal Image covering the same section in 46.93secs according to Trakkus.
Both tired in the straight with Surreal Image, a $13 chance, beaten 5.85 lengths in sixth spot and France’s Boy ($7) a 6.7-length eighth. The race was won by Bedford in a time of 1:47.54.
King and Nugent were interviewed by stewards post-race, as were the trainers of the horses in question, with the inquiry adjourned to a date to be fixed.
France’s Boy and Surreal Image were both vetted following the race. The inspection of Surreal Image failed to reveal an abnormalities, while France’s Boy was found to be suffering from a slow recovery.
