Barrett tipped to be new top dog as Ennis urges ‘underachieving’ club to make call on Pay’s future – Fox Sports

Former Bulldogs skipper Michael Ennis has called on the “underachieving” club to make a decision on coach Dean Pay’s future so that current players and potential recruits can have some “clarity.”

It comes as The Daily Telegraph reports the club is expected to make a call within the coming days, likely to be that Pay wont be re-signed beyond his contract which ends this year.
The Telegraph also reports Panthers assistant coach Trent Barrett is now the favourite to become Canterburys coach from 2021.

Pay, a former Bulldog himself, took the coaching reins in 2018 as the club attempted to rediscover the gritty playing style and family DNA famously found in Belmore.
However, hes struggled to find any success.
Pay inherited a diabolical salary cap situation from a previous CEO, board and coach but the Bulldogs lacklustre results are deemed simply not good enough.

Its been a challenging time for Dean, Fox League expert Ennis said after the Bulldogs were defeated by the Broncos on Saturday.
Weve been over their roster situation but they finished 12th in 2018 under Dean, finished 12th again last year but in both seasons they spent a lot of the season at 15th and this year again down at 16th.

Ennis, who captained the Bulldogs for three years, says the club should be in the same pressure cooker as the Broncos.
The Bulldogs have been underachieving for far too long.

They have been down the bottom of the ladder for not only the last 12 months but for a long, long time, far too long for that club and they need some clarity moving forward so that the club can pursue some recruits.
He believes that regardless of who the coach will be next season, the club just needs to make a call so that current players and potential future players have some certainty.
Whether its Dean Pay or its Trent Barrett as theyre talking about in the paper, the players need to know who the coach is going to be, the recruits need to know.
