This 1865 Surveyor-General’s map shows the locations of floating public baths along the Brisbane river–note that these were primarily for bathing rather than recreation
Brisbane town did not have piped water until 1866 (from Enoggera Reservoir)–until then, residents relied on water carters and their own roof water–and these public baths for their (weekly?) wash
Almost all of these baths were destroyed by the 1893 flood–but by that time, Brisbane had a somewhat improved piped water supply
