US virus cases rise by 62,500 in one day – Yahoo News Australia
Coronavirus cases in the US have risen by a record daily amount for the third day in a row, as the country is divided over how to respond.

The United States has reported at least 62,500 new COVID-19 cases, a record daily increase for a third day in a row.
Seven states reported record increases in cases on Friday: Alaska, Georgia, Louisiana, Montana, Ohio, Utah and Wisconsin. Overall the disease is rising in 44 US states.
The number of confirmed US infections is over 3 million, according to a Reuters tally, stoking fears that hospitals will be overwhelmed.
Americans have become increasingly divided on issues such as the reopening of schools and businesses and wearing face masks in public. There is near-universal consensus among health experts that wearing masks is one of the most effective ways to stop transmission of the virus, which has killed more than 133,000 Americans.
The president has sparred with state and local officials and teachers unions over the reopening of schools and said on Friday the Treasury Department would re-examine the tax-exempt status and funding of those that remain closed.
Trump previously vowed to cut federal funding to the schools and eject foreign students attending universities in the United States unless their schools offer in-person classes, although most education funds come from state and local coffers.
Walt Disney stuck to its plans to reopen its flagship theme park in Orlando on Saturday even as Florida recorded its second-highest increase in cases, with more than 11,000 people diagnosed as infected.
Disney’s chief medical officer said this week that she believes the broad set of safeguards the company developed with health experts would allow guests to visit the park safely.
