NASA declared that its excavator sent to Mars is useless because it did not go deep enough on the red planet to take its temperature.
Scientists in Germany spent two years trying to get the thermometer to penetrate the Martian crust. But the 40-centimeter (16-inch) long device that is part of NASAs InSight probe was unable to generate enough friction on the Martian soil. It was supposed to penetrate 5 meters (16 feet) below the ground, but only did so about half a meter (a couple of feet).
