The 51-year-old was on Interpols red code list. A police statement only confirmed a 51-year-old Argentine had been arrested in an upper-class area of Rio de Janeiro.
The arrest was authorised by Brazils highest court. The man, not confirmed as Cabrera but reported to be him by AP, was charged with assault, theft, illegal intimidation and repeated disrespect to authorities.
