The Queen Mother was a beloved member of the British royal family before her death in 2002.
While she came to represent some of the monarchy’s best qualities – loyalty, duty and a deep regard for Commonwealth nations – she was initially a reluctant royal, refusing her future husband’s marriage proposal three times.
Prince Albert, the Duke of York, first saw Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon at a dinner party in London in June 1920, although they may have met as children as they were raised in the same circles.
