FBI warns ‘mind-blowing’ number of cases to result from US Capitol attack

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has said that in the six days since the attack on the US Capitol, more than 170 investigations had been opened, and those were “just the tip of the iceberg”.

- The FBI is investigating crimes, including sedition, conspiracy and theft of national security information
- Misdemeanour counts could be upgraded to sedition charges
- The FBI said it warned other law enforcement agencies the day before the riot
Washington Field Office assistant director Steve D’Antuono warned those who participated in the attack should expect a knock on their door from the FBI, even if they had since left Washington DC.
He said the number of case files would soar in the weeks ahead as more leads came to light.
