2020 Weather: The year that dawned in fire and ended in flood
2020 saw a welcome shift to cooler and wetter conditions after the widespread drought of the past few years.
Key points:
- The Bureau of Meteorology’s preliminary data is in and 2020 was Australia’s fourth hottest year on record for mean and minimum temperatures
- But 2020’s days were less extreme, coming in at the eighth hottest on record and well below the scorcher of 2019
- Rainfall was above average but not to a huge extent, coming in as Australia’s 39th wettest year
Cooler, that is, compared to the previous year but still historically hot and the rain that fell wasn’t a great deal more than average for the nation as a whole.
