Telstra payphones free for Christmas period to keep Aussies connected

Payphones around Australia will be free to use from Christmas Eve until January 1 to keep people connected to family over the holidays.
Key points:
- Selected Telstra Air wi-fi hotspots will also be free to use
- The initiative last year resulted in almost 500,000 free calls being made
- It is seen as an opportunity for the most vulnerable to call people and feel connected
There are more than 15,000 payphones around the country and more than 11 million calls are made from them every year — only 200,000 of those are made to emergency services.
Father Michael Lowcock, a Catholic priest from Mount Isa in north-west Queensland, said the announcement from Telstra would be a relief for the most vulnerable.
