Gardening Australia tips for sodden veggie patches: Symptoms, mitigation and response

Rookie COVID gardeners and old pros alike are facing a shock to the system as the long-expected La Niña finally kicks into gear, bringing torrential rain for big chunks of the country.
Gardening Australia’s Millie Ross says while heavy rain in a short period of time may be great for filling water tanks, it can also cause problems.
“Too much rain can obviously saturate soil,” she says.
“If you have all of those little parts of the soil that should have oxygen in them filled with water for too long and it’s sodden, then it certainly can start to kill the root system of the plant.”
