Fraser Island welcomes visitors for Christmas season after rain douses recent bushfires
Rain has helped finally contain the bushfires burning for weeks on Fraser Island, and grateful tourism operators are again welcoming customers.
Visitors are now allowed back on the eastern beach and access is being granted to the townships and camping spots.
David Hay, manager of Kingfisher Bay Resort, said it was a relief to see the island open again after a very challenging few months.
“To have a fire within a couple of kilometres of a major tourism asset like Kingfisher Resort is very scary, but the efforts of the emergency services, they coordinated so well, it’s a credit to them,” Mr Hay said.
