Scorched Fraser Island to reopen, as heat remains over emergency response

Department of Environment and Science deputy director-general Ben Klaassen said refunds were available for people affected by closures.
“In great news for Christmas and New Year’s Eve, K’gari [Fraser Island] is reopening for tourists,” he said.

“Accommodation providers can welcome guests again and it is now safe to allow vehicles on the eastern beach and for visitors to access the townships.
“Beach houses and residential accommodation can now open and the island’s most popular destinations will be progressively reopened following hazard assessments and any essential works.”
