Gold Coast beaches closed, very heavy rainfall expected to intensify in south-east Queensland

Heavy rain is expected to continue in south-east Queensland today as a convergence line moves up from the south and a trough moves in from the east.

It is forecast to intensify this evening and coincide with high tides and gale force winds tomorrow.

A severe weather warning is in place from Fraser Island to the New South Wales border for heavy rainfall and damaging winds. 

More than 400 millimetres of rain fell at Springbrook, south of the Gold Coast overnight.

The weather bureau says rainfall in the region was higher than expected last night, when a convergence line stalled over the Queensland-New South Wales border after moving up from the south.
