NSW Government to consider different penalties for possession of drugs

The NSW Government is considering a new approach to penalties for the possession of small amounts of illicit drugs for personal use.
The ABC understands State Cabinet has agreed to look at a new approach to policing drugs across the state.
The Government is still working out the details, including exactly what amount of drugs would fit under the definition of personal use.
The move follows recommendations for drug law reform arising from an inquiry into the use of the drug ice as well as a spate of deaths linked to drug use at music festivals.
State Cabinet is likely to firm up its policy later this month.
A spokesperson for the Government said the plan was not to “decriminalise” possession of illicit drugs.
More to come.
