Job recruitment algorithms can amplify unconscious bias favouring men, new research finds

Algorithms used to help employers select job applicants could be amplifying the gender bias they should prevent, a new study from the University of Melbourne suggests.

- Algorithms are good at matching applicants with keywords but can easily amplify gender bias
- Both the male and female recruiters used for the experiment ranked male CVs higher than women’s
- The study author says not discriminating against women for things such as parental leave must be “coded in” to an algorithm
