Did you know that when the Moreton Bay Penal Colony was first established in 1825, the name Brisbane only applied to the River, named after the NSW Governor, Sir Thomas Brisbane? For many years the township
that sprung up around the penal colony was called Edinglassie, a name bestowed upon it by the then Chief Justice, Francis Forbes. There is some debate about whether the name he chose was a combination of the cities Edinburgh and Glasgow, to reflect the Scottish ancestry of many of its new inhabitants, however it is more likely that he named it after his birthplace at Edinglassie Estate in Scotland.
