Cairns, in far north Queensland is quite the distance from our Capital, Brisbane, around 1685kms in fact. Our paramedics in the region are well-versed in being prepared for and having attended large-scale
incidents and natural hazards such as tropical cyclones. #ThrowbackThursday takes us back to one such large-scale incident that occurred on Monday 17 August 1987, when a railway gas tanker wagon sprung a leak. The escaping gas found its way into the nearby National Hotel where a pilot light flame in a hotel appliance ignited the gas causing a large fire.
