Scientists believe that the asteroid 16 Psyche is the core of a protoplanet that was shattered a few billion years ago. With a composition of 90 percent metal and 10 percent silicate rock, it is believed to be much denser than a rocky object of similar size, which contains approximately 1 percent of the total mass of the asteroid belt.
